I just finished earning my Accredited Financial Counselor® (AFC®) designation. What is it?
Its competency and education areas include:
- Set the Stage and Gather Client Information
- Assist a Client in Creating an Action Plan
- Educate a Client about Financial Statements, Ratios, and Spending Plans
- Manage Money
- Educate a Client about Credit and Debt
- Educate a Client about Major Acquisitions
- Manage Financial Risks
- Discuss Investment Basics with a Client
- Educate a Client about the Financial Aspects of Retirement and Estate Planning
The AFC® certification mark represents the highest standard of excellence in the field of financial counseling and education.

It has a focus on understanding and educating clients, meeting people like you where they are, and helping them take the next step forward. It’s also much broader than a purely education-based credential, and required 1,000 hours of experience, with a much more in depth training program.
It also opens up additional credentialing and volunteer opportunities for me. Stay tuned for what’s next!
